Space Deficient, and (trying to be) proud of it

This is what happens when I ask the girls to play in their room only.
I don't ask them to stay in their room very often. It's almost a form of punishment, as their room is smaller than some closets.

Lately, I been feeling more than a little confined by our space and lack thereof. Since we don't see a move in our not-too-distant future (although we'd love one), I have decided to see our space as a blessing rather than a curse.

Here are some reasons our small space is great:
  • Our home is easier/faster to clean up
  • We don't collect much junk
  • We can hear our kids if (when) they wake up at night
  • We have what we need and not much more
  • I can stand in one place in my kitchen and access almost every drawer and cupboard
  • We always know where the girls are
  • When the day comes that we move, it won't take too much effort

If you can think of any other reasons for us to love our small space, please let us know so we can feel even better about living in less than 1,000 square feet with a family of five.

You can spend more time with your family going places and doing other things because, yes, a small space is much easier/faster to clean. We are taking care of Weston's parents' humungous house and I feel like I spend less time with my family and outside because I'm am cleaning so much more. We make more messes in more rooms. And we have accumulated so much STUFF! I envy you for having a small place! (One of my favorite HGTV shows is 'Small Space Big Style'.)

I really enjoyed this post. We are also in a small space (though ours is a little bigger than 1000 sq. ft.) And for some reason baby #3 has made it seem even smaller. But you are right. I'm always thinking before I buy things "Do we really need it and where in heaven's name will I put it". " 'Tis a gift to be simple." Am I right?

Reasons Small can be good:

- Less room to build up running speed before hitting a wall. and/or other objects.
- Not as easy to back flop flat onto the ground from a hand stand, you will probably hit the sofa, softening the impact.
- Small heating and cooling bills.
- Easy to explore ever nook and cranny.
- Easier to find things that you have lost..like your keys.
- When its dark and your arms are out searching for something.. they touch a wall sooner so you don't have to keep walking so slow anticipating a shin splitting, or toe breaking impact for as long.
- Faster and thus more... hide and seek games.
- Small houses are intimate
- You can change the design style in your house with less money and more often.

I could go on all day but I better quit. let me know if you need more.

Shane,
Those are all excellent points.

I'd still love a garage. It might be perfect with a garage.

There are lots and lots of hide-n-seek games. Lots.
